Nivalan mukaan biojalostamoa on valmisteltu noin 1,5 vuotta julkisuudelta piilossa.

– Tämän 1,5 vuoden työn jälkeen tiedämme jo, että hanke on kannattava ja raaka-ainetta riittää. Sitä vahvisti vielä työ- ja elinkeinoministeriön biojalostamokilpailu. Hankkeen on tutkinut kilpailun kansainvälinen tuomaristo, joka totesi, että hanke on toteuttamiskelpoinen, siinä hyödynnetään kotimaista raaka-ainetta ja se tuo työtä ja toimeentuloa alueelle, jossa sitä kaivataan, Nivala sanoo.

Nivala pitää Kemijärven biojalostamon toteutumista todennäköisenä.

– Erityisesti meillä on siellä muutama kilpailutekijä, joissa me pärjätään. Raaka-ainetta eli kuitupuuta on runsaasti tarjolla. Tällä hetkellä pitkäkuituisen sellun ja siitä johdannaisten tuotteiden kysyntä kasvaa maailmanlaajuisesti. Paikkoja, joissa näitä tuotteita voidaan tuottaa, on rajallisesti. Nivala lisää, että Kemijärvi kilpailee muiden maiden, kuten esimerkiksi Pohjois-Amerikan kanssa investoinneista.

Kemijärveä laitoksen sijoituspaikkana puoltavat myös kulkuyhteydet.
