A petition to save the Nuutajarvi glass factory, the oldest glass factory in Finland
The Nuutajarvi glass factory is the oldest Finnish glass factory, founded in 1793. Nuutajarvi is in Urjala county, in Pirkanmaa, South of Finland. It is the most significant tourist attraction in Urjala and has been chosen for one the most significant national cultural envinroments. The Nuutajarvi glass factory is the oldest glass factory in Finland, and it is still operational. Fiskars, the owner of the factory has made an announcement that they will close the factory down during year 2014 and transfer all the operations to Iittala glass factory.
The history of the town of Nuutajarvi and also the history of the glass factory is significant. Despite the several changes in ownership the
factory has been able to remain operational for over 200 years. Some of the most recognized Finnish names in a glass design, like Kaj Franck and Oiva Toikka have both worked at the Nuutajarvi glass factory, succeeding of making a Finnish glass design world known. The name Nuutajarvi has always been connected to a high quality Finnish glass.
The closing of the Nuutajarvi glass factory will not only be devastating to all the employees, but also to all the residents of the town and all the
those who care about the glass art. It also sends out a message of how little the arts are cultivated and cared for. The capitalism and search for higher profits has possibly defeated the glass factory and possibly also the future of the idyllic town.
We, the people signing the petition will appeal to the owners of the Nuutajarvi glass factory to save it. Please, do not close down the glass factory that has been operational for the centuries.
