Nivalan mukaan Kemijärven laitos olisi uuden sukupolven biojalostamo. Se tuottaisi paikallisesta havupuusta uusia tuotteita esimerkiksi tekstiiliteollisuuteen, energiateollisuuteen ja rehutuotantoon. Eli esimerkiksi kalojen ja siipikarjan rehuksi.

Biojalostamon toimintaedellytyksiä on selvitetty hankkeessa, jota vetää Suomen metsäkeskus. Heikki Nivala sanoo, että hän ei voi kertoa kuka hankkeen takana on.

– Kyseessä on teollinen investoija, mutta en voi tiedottaa asiasta heidän puolestaan.

Nivala vahvistaa, että Stora Enso ei ainakaan ole kyseessä.

Nivala kuitenkin kertoo, että investoinnista on tarkoitus päättää vielä tänä vuonna, kun tarkemmat kannattavuuslaskelmat on tehty. Nivala sanoo, että alustavan arvion mukaan biojalostamo maksaisi 700-800 miljoonaa euroa.

Töitä tulisi varovaisen arvion mukaan noin tuhannelle ihmiselle, kun tehdas olisi toiminnassa.

Nivala arvioi, että biojalostamo olisi toiminnassa ennen vuotta 2020.

Kemijärven biojalostamo oli mukana Kemijärvi konsortio -nimellä työ- ja elinkeinoministeriön biojalostamokilpailussa. Hanke menestyi kilpailussa ja ylsi kolmen parhaan joukkoon. Ministeriö lupaa kolmelle voittajahankkeelle apua julkisen rahoituksen hankkimisessa.
