Käyttöönottovaiheessa jätevesiä voidaan johtaa tarvittaessa myös nykyiselle jätevedenpuhdistamolle. Lisäksi mahdollisissa häiriötilanteissa jätevedet on mahdollista ohjata varoaltaalle aivan kuten nykyisen sellutehtaan jätevedenpuhdistamolla.


Jätevedenpuhdistamon käyttöönottovaihe kestää 2−4 viikkoa.

Biotuotetehtaan jätevedenpuhdistamo perustuu moniportaiseen biologiseen puhdistusprosessiin ja kemialliseen jatkokäsittelyyn. Tavanomaista monivaiheisemman prosessin avulla jätevedenpuhdistamon puhdistustulos paranee ja häiriöherkkyys pienenee.

”Modernin puhdistusteknologian avulla biotuotetehdas pystyy toimimaan nykyisen tehdasintegraatin jätevesilupaehtojen mukaisesti huolimatta biotuotetehtaan lähes kolminkertaistuvasta sellun tuotantomäärästä”, Merikallio toteaa.

Biotuotetehtaan päästöt eivät vaikuta alapuolisen vesistön virkistys- tai muuhun käyttöön tai ekologiseen tilaan. Keski-Suomen ja Pohjois-Savon ELY-keskus hyväksyi helmikuun 2016 lopulla biotuotetehtaan alapuolisen vesistön päivitetyn tarkkailusuunnitelman, johon kuuluva näytteenotto-ohjelma on jo otettu käyttöön. Tarkkailuohjelman avulla pystytään seuraamaan tarkasti vesistön tilaa sekä ennen biotuotetehtaan käynnistymistä että käynnistymisen jälkeen. Jos näytteiden tuloksissa havaitaan merkittäviä muutoksia, tulee tehtaan ryhtyä välittömästi korjaaviin toimenpiteisiin.
