Tommi Mäkinen aikoo rakentaa WRC-tallipäällikön roolinsa Toyotalla aivan omalta pohjalta.

- En oikein tiedä, millaisia tallipäällikön työt ovat perinteisesti, mutta eiköhän meillä ole käytännössä sama malli kuin muillakin. Siinä mielessä minun roolini on erilainen, että minulla on vastuu tiimin rakentamisesta ja kokonaisuuden hoitamisesta, Mäkinen sanoo MTV Sportille.

Mäkinen kertoo, että asia on kypsynyt pitkään, mutta ratkaisevat askeleet on otettu tämän vuoden puolella.

- Viime kesänä ja syksynä jo Toyotan kanssa palaveerattiin, ja syksyllä tehtiin periaatepäätös. Pitkäaikainen projekti, jonka aikana on pidetty kymmeniä palavereja niin Suomessa, Japanissa kuin Saksassakin.
Maailman suurimman mentaliteetilla

Toyota palaa rallin MM-sarjaan 18 vuoden tauon jälkeen ja toimii läheisessä yhteistyössä Tommi Mäkinen Racingin ja Toyota Gazoo Racingin kanssa. Puuppolan mies tarttuu toimeen innokkaasti, mutta ei leimaa pestiään suoranaiseksi unelmatyöksi.

- Uskon, että tästä tulee kiva ja positiivinen projekti, mutta myös haaste. Tuote tulee rakentaa maailman suurimman autonvalmistajan mentaliteetilla. Se vaatii aikamoisen määrän ammatti-ihmisiä, voimavaroja ja testaamista. Haaste on myös se, että meillä on jo todella kiire asian suhteen.

Toyotan paluukaudelle, eli vuoden 2017 rallin MM-sarjaan, tulee radikaaleja sääntömuutoksia. Mäkinen uumoilee, että se tasoittaa tallien välisiä voimasuhteita.

- Suunnittelu on alkanut jo ja ehtinyt aika pitkällekin. Ensimmäisen rekrytoinnin on oltava suunnittelutiimi. Perusteet on saatava kuntoon, ja prototyyppien rakentamisen pitää alkaa. Reilu vuosi on aikaa päättää, millainen meidän WRC tulee olemaan vuodelle 2017. Korien rakentaminen pitää aloittaa hyvissä ajoin, koska vuoden 2017 alussa pitää olla ainakin kymmenen autoa valmiina.
Vain paras on kyllin hyvää

Tommi Mäkinen korostaa, että Toyotan motto yhtiön historian alusta alkaen on ollut asiakaslähtöisyys. Sen on näyttävä myös rallin MM-sarjaan osallistuvassa tallissa.

- On tunnettava hyvin tuote, jota valmistetaan, jotta pystytään valmistamaan ja toimittamaan kuluttajille vain parasta mahdollista, hän sanoo.

Näillä näkymin Toyotan WRC-tallin toiminnot keskittyvät Suomeen. Se tuo tallille kotimaista leimaa, mutta asettaa omat haasteensakin.

– Kölnin kanssa teemme tietenkin yhteistyötä, mutta se ei ole vaihtoehto rallitoiminnan pesäpaikaksi, Mäkinen paljasti.
