Vaikka metsäpolitiikka kuuluu kansalliseen päätösvaltaan, EU-tasolla linjataan jatkuvasti asioita, jotka vaikuttavat suoraan metsien käyttöön: on lintudirektiiviä, kasvinsuojeluasetusta, hiilinielumäärittelyä ja kestävyyskriteeritarkastelua. Juuri nyt komissio viimeistelee tiedonantoaan liikenteen dekarbonisaatiosta ja esitystään maankäytön ja metsien vaikutuksesta ilmastomuutokseen. Työn alla on myös uusiutuvan energian direktiivin uudistus sekä esitys biomassan kestävyyskriteereistä.

Kaikilla näillä on merkittävä vaikutus suomalaiseen metsätalouteen. Suomalaisten on siis syytä olla valppaana ja tuoda oikeaa tietoa valmistelijoiden käyttöön riittävän aikaisessa vaiheessa. Missään muussa EU-maassa metsätalouden merkitys elinkeinona ja kansantuotteessa ei ole yhtä merkittävä kuin Suomessa. Siksi on tärkeää, että suomalaiset pitävät Brysselissä esillä kestävän metsätalouden näkökulmaa, ja kertovat kuinka metsiä voidaan hyödyntää luontoa ja ympäristöarvoja kunnioittavalla tavalla.
