Asuminen on lisääntynyt erityisesti sisemmällä kaupunkialueella eli lähellä kaupungin ydinkeskustaa. Uloimmalla kaupunkialueella asuvien osuus on puolestaan pienentynyt. Toinen kasvanut alue on ollut kaupungin kehysalue. Maaseudulla asuvien osuus on pienentynyt.
Kaupunki-maaseutu-luokituksella voidaan korvata kuntarajoihin perustuva kaupungin ja maaseudun erottelu sekä maaseudun kolmijako. Luokituksen on laatinut Suomen ympäristökeskus yhdessä Oulun Yliopiston Maantieteen laitoksen kanssa.
